Enterprise
Despite its new name, Atlantia Works Oy has a long history in the mining and engineering industry. Our story begins with the Mustavaara mine of Rautaruukki Oy that was operating in Taivalkoski in 1976-1985. In the 1970s, the mine was the largest producer of vanadium in Western Europe and a major producer worldwide. The mine employed 300 people. Rautaruukki stopped mining as unprofitable in 1985 as the world market prices of vanadium fell due to oversupply. Transtech Oy, a Rautaruukki subsidiary, built a railway wagon factory in Taivalkoski in 1985, and miners were retrained as metalworkers. In 1998, Telatek purchased the railway wagon factory, and the factory was turned into a heavy engineering workshop specializing in the manufacture of hulls for large propeller systems.
